Welcome to the official documentation for the Kocho app.
Here you will find the latest information about the features available for making visual novels with Kocho.
Starting the Kocho app will show you the Library and Workshop screens. On this documentation we will focus on the Workshop, where you can make your own visual novels.
You can create novels by tapping on the + button and edit them by tapping on the newly created novel card.
On this tab you can edit your novel start screen and credits by tapping on their respecting tiles.
You can also create chapters by tapping on the + button.
2.1. Start screen
On this screen you can change the start screen background image, the menu text color and the BGM.
You can edit a chapter by tapping on it.
The order of the chapters matters in the timeline.
By long pressing a chapter you can arrange them into their final order.
In Kocho, a chapter is a collection of scenes.
Just like chapters, the order of the scenes matters.
By long pressing a scene you can arrange them into their final order.
In Kocho, a scene is a collection of actions.
Just like chapters and scenes, the order of the actions matters.
By long pressing an action you can arrange them into their final order.
By tapping an action, you can preview the scene until that point. You can recognize the selected action with a blue text.
Adding an action after selecting an action will insert the new action immediately after the selected action.

The most common action in a visual novel.
You can input the speaker/author, the message and decide between a standard or large text box.
You can also leave an empty message, which is useful when you want to hide the text box for the player to admire the scenery.
126.96.36.199. Change characters
You can change the characters on the scene by selecting a character and expression you added on the Characters tab or adding new ones on the go. A character can have multiple expressions, each with its own image. You can also change the character position on the scene and flip it.
To add more than one character, tap the "Add Character" button and select another character.
Added characters will appear on the top as chips, you can edit them by tapping on the chip or remove them by tapping on the chip ✕ button.

You can change the scenery of the scene by selecting one you added on the Scenery tab or adding a new one on the go. You can also pick between a range of transition effects.

You can change the BGM of the scene by selecting one you added on the BGM tab or adding a new one on the go. You can also change the BGM volume.
220.127.116.11. Add choices
You can add up to 4 choices to the scene simultaneously. Each choice has one message and can have multiple effects on multiple variables, which are useful to add conditions and make an interactive story.
You can add variables by selecting one you created on the Variables tab or creating a new one on the go, picking an operator and a value to be applied to the variable if the player picks that choice.
Added variables will appear on the top as chips, you can edit them by tapping on the chip or remove them by tapping on the chip ✕ button.

By default, the timeline goes on a straight line. With "Go to" actions you can skip or go back to a specific scene in the timeline and decide if it should continue from that scene or come back to the original scene. Combined with conditions, they can become a powerful tool to make complex stories.
Conditions are restrictions which can be applied to a chapter, scene or action. If all the restrictions are fulfilled, they appear on the novel, otherwise they are skipped.
You can add them by tapping on the three dots on the right side and selecting a variable, an operator and a value to be compared to the variable during the gameplay.
Added conditions will appear on the top as chips, you can remove them by tapping on the chip ✕ button.
Chapters, scenes and actions with conditions will have a visual reminder on the right side.
Credit your work and anyone who helped in making your novel with their name and role. Credits always appear at the end of the novel and they appear in the order you put them in the credits screen.
By long pressing a credit you can arrange them into their final order.
On this tab you can add characters by tapping on the + button. On the next screen you can name, describe and add expressions for your character.
You can add expressions by tapping on the top right button and then on the "Add expression" tile.
One character can have multiple images associated with it, these are known as expressions.
On this screen you can name the expression and pick an image for it by tapping on the top right button.

On this tab you can add BGM by tapping on the + button. On the next screen you can name the BGM and pick an audio for it by tapping on the top right button.
On this tab you can add variables by tapping on the + button. On the next screen you can name the variable.
Variables are used in both choices and conditions to make an interactive story with multiple routes.
On this tab you can customize your novel GUI (Graphical User Interface) by picking the text boxes colors, opacity and width.
You can preview/play your novel on the Workshop screen by tapping on the three dots on the right side.
Save data during development may become corrupted if new chapters, scenes or actions are added before the save point.
At the moment, Kocho does not backup your work automatically. We recommend you backup your work periodically on the Workshop screen by tapping on the three dots on the right side.
Choose your preferred cloud drive app from the list. This app must be installed on your phone.
You can load novel backup files from the + button on the Library page.
When you are ready to share your novel. You can do it on the Workshop screen by tapping on the three dots on the right side.
Choose your preferred cloud drive or messaging app from the list. This app must be installed on your phone. This will save/send the playable novel file.
Players can play the novel on their phones with the Kocho app by loading the novel file from the + button on the Library page.
